Description of Copper Oxide CuO

Copper oxide (CuO) is a common black copper oxide, presenting as black to brownish-black powder or granules. It has a molar mass of about 79.55 g/mol and a density of 6.315 g/cm³, decomposing at 1026℃. Insoluble in water and alcohol, it dissolves easily in acids, and also in ammonium salt under specific conditions.

It features typical chemical properties of metal oxides: it can be reduced to metallic copper by hydrogen and other reducing agents when heated, reacts with acids to form copper salts and water, and decomposes into cuprous oxide and oxygen at high temperatures.

As a versatile inorganic material, CuO is widely used in catalysis, pigmentation, electronics and environmental protection fields, such as being a catalyst/carrier, coloring pigment for ceramics and glass, raw material for semiconductors and superconductors, and for flue gas desulfurization and denitrification. It has mild biological toxicity, so protective measures are required during operation to avoid dust inhalation and direct contact with skin and eyes.

·  Catalysis: Can be used as catalyst, catalyst carrier, electrode active material and rocket propellant.

·  Coloring: Serves as color pigment for ceramics, enamel, glass and artificial gemstones.

·  Superconductivity: Usable for manufacturing oxide high-temperature superconductors with a critical superconducting temperature above 77K, and applied in superconducting wires.

·  Semiconductor: As a typical p-type narrow band gap semiconductor, it can be used in gas sensors, solar cells, photocatalysts, capacitor electrodes and so on.

·  Other Fields: Also applicable for flue gas desulfurization and denitrification, production of adhesives, soldering fluxes and activators in phosphor mixtures; and can be used to make rayon, copper compounds, bactericides, paint anti-wrinkle agents and the like.
